The craft's miniature cameras, radio science experiment, ultraviolet and infrared spectrometers and space plasma experiments would characterize the global geology and geomorphology of Pluto and large moon Charon, map their surface compositions and temperatures, and examine Pluto's atmosphere in detail. The spacecraft's most prominent design feature is a nearly 7-foot (2.1-meter) dish antenna, through which it will communicate with Earth from as far as 4.7 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers) away.

虽然冥王星的行星之位已被拿掉,但不代表人们便会对它全无兴趣。在 2006 年发射前往冥王星的 New Horizons 太空船目前已经接近这个被降级为矮行星的天体,并且在 5 月 29 号至 6 月 3 号期间利用船上的「多色相机」(Multicolor Visible Imaging Camera)分别拍摄了它九次。这个相机能拍到蓝色、红色和近红色线,在经合成之后得出下面这彩色但模糊的动态照,就连在它外围公转的冥卫一(Charon,冥王星的其中一个卫星)也被拍到;我们可以见到冥王星是呈米黄色,而冥卫一则是呈灰色。接下来, New Horizons 将会在 7 月 14 号最接近冥王星之时(约 12,550 公里之外 )再次拍摄它的外貌,希望届时有较清楚的照片吧。
