Computex 2009:工研院的 OLED 省电技术

资策会的 Mtube II 旁边展示的,是工研院的 OLED 省电技术,两者其实是同一个计划的,未来也希望能将这些技术一起应用在次世代的 Netbook 上。我知道你在想什么:OLED?OLED 不就是以省电出名的吗?为什么还要特别再开始 OLED 的省电技术?今天小姜在现场被一连串高技术含量的专业内容轰炸完之后,大概了解了事实的真相:原来 OLED 这种技术的耗电量是不定的,以 7" 的屏幕来说,从 0 瓦(全黑)到 6~7 瓦(全白)都有可能。相较之下,技术完全不同的 7" LED 背光 LCD 屏幕则是差不多恒定在 2W 左右。因此看照片、影片这种色彩丰富的东西所花的电力,反而不如看一片全白的网页高。

工研院的技术就是如何将原本是白色背景的网页、文件档转换成同样易读的黑色背景,以节省电力。如上图可以看到的,差异可以高达 25 倍呢!另一个技术是如何去更改图片的色彩,才能尽量在不影响人眼看到的内容的前提下,采用比较「省电」的颜色(范例在继续阅读里)。这一来一去之间省下的电力,可是非常可观的呢!

如果 OLED 的技术进步继续像现在这样乌龟爬的话,第一代的 OLED 笔电恐怕真要借助工研院这样的技术才能多省一点电下来了...

<Computex 2009: OLED Energy Saving Technology from ITRI>
Next to the Mtube II from III is the demonstration for OLED energy saving technology. Both projects were developed under the same umbrella of plans, which hopefully will be used in next generation of netbooks. One might want to ask, isn't OLED supposed to be a low energy-consumption technology? Why develop an energy saving technology for something that's already using much less energy?

After a massive bombardment of high tech jargons and lengthy explanation that only engineering professionals would be interested in, we were surprised to learn the fact that OLED's energy consumption varies, depending on the images being displayed. Take for example, a 7" OLED screen's energy consumption would varies from 0 watt (full black) to 6~7 watts (full white.) In contrast, a LED backlighted LCD screen will consume around 2 watts constantly. So in terms of OLED, a colourful photo or video will consume less energy than a blank screen with white background.

What ITRI have developed, is a method to convert web pages and documents with white background into something that is equally legible, but with black background. As illustrated in the photos above, it can make as much as 25 times differences. The other technology that ITRI have developed is how to change colour scheme of an image into more 'energy-efficient' colour scheme without making significant alteration to how human eyes perceive the image.
