东芝称公司仍然倾向为高级光学DVD 磁盘开发一种统一的格式标准，由于DVD 两大阵营竞争所生产的产品不兼容，因此很可能给市场带来冲击。

东芝公司作为下一代HD DVD光盘技术的主要倡导者，其主要竞争对手是提出蓝光标准的索尼和松下电子下属的制造商松下公司。
